What is it?
A hashtag is the use of the # symbol in front of a topic name on the social networking site, Twitter. A Twitter user tweets their message and includes the hash symbol to tag the topic. If a lot of people tag the same topic it is considered to be trending, or popular.
Some live TV programs use hashtags to locate Tweets to display along the bottom of the screen.
How does it work?
A hashtag is simply an icon that shows other Twitter users that a topic is becoming popular and a way of tracking who else is also tweeting about the topic within the Twitter community.
Why is it useful?
Hashtagging helps people create and track topics within the Twitter community. If you are a Twitter user you can add the # symbol to any topic or to a trending topic if you are choosing to tweet about it.
What do you need to keep in mind about your child and hashtags?
Because hashtagging is a useful way to follow a topic in real time, your child could potentially use it for research or to take part in a fast moving, potentially world-wide conversation.
