What is it?

Ning is a social networking site where you can search from the hundreds of mini social networking sites created by users, or even create your own for a fee.

How does it work?

Ning was launched in 2005 by two experienced internet developers so that anyone can create their own online communities (for a fee). By going through a handful of steps, a user can set up their own social networking site and invite others to join. Or, you can use the site's search function to find sites that you might like to join.

Why is it useful?

Although there are a handful of social networking sites that are popular with hundreds of millions of users world-wide, micro online communities can be fun and useful for smaller groups of people.

What do you need to keep in mind about your child and using a ning?

As a part of a homework assignment or in relation to extra-curricular activities, your child may want to create their own social networking site, or search to see what mini sites are available to join. However, only users 13 years and older are allowed to use the site's features.
