Android is an open-source operating system that controls the way a smart mobile device (a smartphone or tablet) works. It was created by Google and is used by smartphone companies around the world. Every smartphone has an operating system. The operating system in an Apple device is called iOS.

The Android operating system can be used for smartphones, netbooks and tablets.
Why is Android useful?
The Android operating system enables smartphone manufacturers to provide an alternative to other smartphone operating systems. As the code is open source (ie freely available to developers), it has enabled a wider variety of devices to be made available for consumers.
