What is it?
Copyright is just what it sounds like - the ability to say who can and can't copy a creation such as a picture or text. It normally belongs to the person who created it unless specifically assigned to someone else. Copyright normally expires some decades after the death of the owner.
How does it work?
It is common practice to indicate the copyright of something by attaching the word "copyright" or the © symbol and the year of copyright to the item, whenever it is used. For instance © 2012.
What do you need to keep in mind about your children and copyright?
This is a very important subject for everyone. Use of a copyright item without permission is illegal unless covered by "fair use" practices. For instance, schools pay a certain amount to a copyright body to compensate authors for the use or copying of their work. Copying copyright music or pictures from the internet or other people is also illegal.
